Cawdor is a stunning fairytale Castle and is still used by the Cawdor family today. Famous from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Cawdor Castle dates from the 14th century and was built by the then Thane of Cawdor as a fortress with its ancient medieval tower built around the legendary holly-tree.

Although the House has evolved over 600 years, later additions mainly of the 17th century were all built in the Scottish vernacular style with slated roofs over walls and crow-stepped gables of mellow local stone. This style gives Cawdor a strong sense of unity, and the massive, severe exterior belies an intimate interior that gives the place a surprisingly personal, friendly atmosphere.

As well as the Castle Cawdor offers the three beautiful gardens, the Cawdor Big Wood and a 9-hole golf course. The Castle will be opening to the public earlier this year from Friday 22nd April 2011.

The Battle of Culloden took place on 16th April 1746 and the course of British, European and world history was changed forever.

The Jacobite army fought to reclaim the throne of Britain from the Hanoverians for a Stuart king however the British Army was just as determined to prevent this from occurring.

The ferocious European war had come to Scotland splitting families and turning clans against against each other.
